New Delhi - Indian Railways has achieved another milestone by registering the highest ever freight loading in history. This is one of the biggest achievements of the national transporter since independence. In the FY 2022-23, it recorded freight loading of 1512 Metric Tonnes (MT). It witnessed an incremental loading of 94 MT from FY 2021-22. In the fiscal year 2021-22, the railways achieved freight loading of 1418 MT.

In the FY 2017-18, the national transporter achieved freight loading of 1161 MT followed by 1223 MT in FY 2018-19, 1210 MT in FY 2019-20, 1233 MT in FY 2020-21, 1418 in FY 2021-22 and 1512 MT in the previous fiscal year. With this, the railways has witnessed a growth of 31 straight months of best ever monthly freight loading which had started in September 2020.

One of the key reasons for the freight performance was the Indian Railways’ sustained efforts in supply of coal to power houses across the country. This was done in close coordination with the Ministry of Power and Coal. In the last financial year, the loading of coal has witnessed a growth of 84 MT as against FY 2021-22.

In addition, it also recorded an excellent performance in automobile loading. A total of 5527 rakes have been loaded in FY 2022-23  as compared to 3344 rakes in FY 2021-22 i.e. a growth of 65 percent.

Freight loading in FY 2023-24 In the FY 2023-24, the national transporter has achieved freight loading of 758.20 MT in the first two quarters. Thus, it witnessed an improvement of 21.52 MT (approx) over the last year’s loading for the same period. In the FY 2022-23, it achieved freight performance of 736.68 MT from April-September.
