Mumbai - Mumbai Port Authority (MbPA) is pleased to announce the successful movement of Tata passenger vehicles (120 units) by rail from the Sanand, Gujarat to Mumbai Port for export to Durban, South Africa via  MV Pleiades Spirit regulated at OCT berth under the agency M/s Mitsui OSK Lines. This initiative marks a significant step toward promoting sustainable logistics and reducing road congestion in and around the port.

A dedicated rail rake consisting of 24 NMG-HS (New Modified Goods-High Speed) wagons, carrying 120 TATA Tiago Cars (five per wagon) was deployed to transport the export-bound passenger vehicles directly from the Chharodi Railway Station about 3 km away from the Sanand Plant to the port’s loading point, substantially minimizing trailer movements on public roads.

The movement represents a historic achievement, as it is the first-ever-rail-borne consignment of export automobiles received in Indira Dock in the history of Mumbai Port. By shifting these 120 vehicles movement from road to rail, Tata Motors and Mumbai Port have jointly contributed to lowering carbon emissions, enhancing operational efficiency, and ensuring safer, smoother cargo handling.

Mumbai Port Authority actively encourages exporters to utilize rail-based logistics solutions, which not only streamline movement within the port ecosystem but also reduce traffic load on city roads. This modal shift aligns with MbPA’s vision of promoting environment-friendly transportation and supporting India’s broader sustainability objectives.

The successful execution of this rail-based movement demonstrates the strong collaboration between Mumbai Port Authority, Tata Motors, and logistics partners, reinforcing Mumbai Port’s position as a preferred gateway for automotive exports.

Mumbai Port Authority remains committed to facilitating efficient, green, and future-ready logistics solutions for trade and industry.
