MoPSW highlights measures to improve Coastal Infrastructure

Delhi - Coastal development projects across the country have been identified by the Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways. These include projects from various categories such as modernisation of existing ports and terminals, new ports/ terminals, RoRo/ RoPax& tourism jetties, enhancement of port connectivity, inland waterways, lighthouse tourism, industrialization around ports, skill development, technology centres etc. and are being implemented by the Central Line Ministries/ Departments, State Governments/ Departments and Major ports etc. Further, in the Union Budget 2023-24, Government of India has made an announcement promoting coastal shipping as the energy efficient and lower cost mode of transport, through PPP mode with viability gap funding. This will result in accelerated growth of coastal infrastructure leading to holistic development of coastal areas. Under Sagarmala Scheme, Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways has partially funded 171 projects worth Rs. 10,960 Cr across coastal states and UTs.

Out of 171 projects, 53 projects worth Rs. 3,310 Cr. have been completed and 118 projects worthRs. 7,660 Cr. are under various stages of implementation and development. The State/UT-wise details of the Sagarmala funded projects are attached as Annexure-I.

The Ministry carries out regular meetings with the stakeholders to understand the concerns and specific issues hindering the progress of implementation of projects and make requisite efforts to iron out the difficulties to ensure timely execution of projects. Further, the Ministry, from time to time, holds Maritime States Development Council (MSDC) meetings as a framework of consultative planning where challenges and opportunities in marine sector are discussed for creating synergy and to ensure the optimum management and utilization of the available coastline by way of participation of all stakeholders.
