Determined to deliver & offer Better, Faster & More Reliable Service : PSA Mumbai, CEO Andy Lane

Mumbai - PSA Mumbai recently marked a significant milestone with the achievement of handling more than two million TEUs in 2023! The container volume growth at the terminal was 30% year-on-year during this period.

To mark this significant achievement, PSA Mumbai hosted a celebratory event to commemorate the occasion on 5 January. Attended by customers, Government officials, and industry associations, the event offered a platform for PSA to express gratitude and strengthen relationships with stakeholders who have played a crucial role in the terminal’s success.

Daily Shipping Times caught up with PSA Mumbai’s CEO Andy Lane to understand its journey so far and way ahead going forward.

1.Congrats for achieving the milestone of handling 2 million TEUs in such a short time at PSA Mumbai. How has been your journey at PSA Mumbai?

It has been an incredible journey, full of challenges and opportunities in the six years since our start-up to achieving this milestone. We started with a small team but a big dream that we were determined to deliver, and offer better, faster, and more reliable service to our customers.

2. PSA International has been amongst the early entrant in Indian Port Sector since over 
20 years? How do you the see growth opportunities going forward in India?

It has been 25 years since PSA made its first foray into Indian ports. Along with PSA Mumbai, we also operate seaports in PSA Chennai and PSA Kolkata, serving the industry as a vital player. PSA has invested heavily in modernizing and upgrading port facilities to improve efficiency and increase cargo throughput and landside capabilities through PSA Ameya, which operates container freight stations (CFS) in Mumbai and Mundra. Our global freight forwarding and logistics arm PSA BDP, which boasts of 13 offices Pan-India, allows us to offer a wider range of end-to-end services to our customers. PSA has also implemented advanced technologies such as automation and digitalization to enhance port operations and provide customers with seamless end-to-end logistics solutions. With our strong presence and extensive network, PSA India is well-positioned to meet the evolving needs of its customers and drive growth in the sector for years to come.

3.PSA International is mostly recognized as a Port Operator company? Do you foresee any investment into other verticals in India? Which verticals entice you most ?

PSA International (PSA) is a leading global port operator and trusted supply chain partner to cargo stakeholders. Drawing on the deep expertise and experience from a diverse global team, PSA collaborates with its customers and partners to develop world-class port ecosystems, deliver innovative cargo solutions and co-create an Internet of Logistics to accelerate the shift towards sustainable trade.

4.PSA Mumbai has to compete with others Terminal Operators at Nhava Sheva - Mumbai? How do you ensure that you get new customers consistently?

PSA Mumbai takes pride in offering the best-in-class infrastructure and facilities and operational efficiency to the industry. With the longest berth length of 1 km which will double upon completion of our Phase 2 expansion and deepest berth depth alongside 16.5 meters, we can accommodate the largest vessels calling Mumbai today with flexibility in berthing arrangements. With our emphasis on vessel productivity alongside, we help customers to shorten their port stay which allows for efficient fuel management like slow steaming at sea and lower net emissions. In addition, PSA Mumbai offers direct rail connectivity within the terminal which is slated to be connected via the Dedicated Freight Corridor (DFC) initiative to key hinterland locations.

5.What are the unique service offerings to your clientele? How PSA Mumbai connects to the rest of the World?

PSA Mumbai is a hub that connects to 17 sea-going services, linking ports across the globe from Africa and Europe to the US, East Asia, the Middle East and South-East Asia. PSA Mumbai also offers rail connections to 63 inland CFS and ICDs, making it a highly accessible destination for you’re the many companies across various industries. With our extensive inland and ocean network, PSA Mumbai is an ideal gateway for businesses looking to expand their reach beyond India.

6.How is the Second phase of expansion plans moving on? Can you please elaborate on your expansion front in Mumbai?

We're excited to announce that our expansion project will increase our capacity from 2.4 to 4.8 million TEUs per year. The first phase of 400 meters with two additional cranes is set for completion in January 2025. The final 600 meters of quay will be finished by April 2025. As part of our phase 2 expansion, we are also expecting our rail capacity to increase from 0.7m TEUs to 1.4m TEUs. In tandem with the expected completion of the Dedicated Freight Corridor, this will enable us to provide efficient and sustainable connectivity with the hinterland. We're pleased to share that our phase 2 expansion project to-date is on schedule.

7. After being the first container terminal in India to be powered by 100% renewable energy, what are the future ESG goals PSA Mumbai aspires to achieve?

Our team is committed to reducing emissions and improving air quality within our terminal and are converting all our current 36 diesel RTGs to be powered by electricity by 2027. We are also exploring opportunities to replace other diesel equipment with electric alternatives throughout the decade.

Our internal goal is to achieve a 50% reduction in gross emissions by 2030, compared to our baseline emissions in 2019 and we are on track to meet this objective. Leveraging on our rail infrastructure, we are also promoting to the industry sustainable transportation for moving cargo between the port and the hinterland. We are continually exploring new technologies and solutions that can help expedite this objective and are confident that with the commitment of our team and the support of our partners, we can make a significant contribution towards a cleaner future.

To promote eco-friendly transportation, PSA Mumbai and PSA Ameya will work with PSA BDP to introduce electric trucks for import and export container trucking in early 2024. This one-of-a-kind, zero-emission transportation solution in the Indian market supports our commitment to environmentally conscious practices, with a focus on reducing emissions.

8. Like, ESG initiatives, are there any specific digital initiatives we should be in the lookout for from PSA Mumbai?

Our team is constantly enhancing our digital processes to simplify and streamline business transactions and the exchange of information for the convenience of our customers. We are open to collaborating with like-minded stakeholders to gain valuable insights that ensure our products and solutions meet the highest standards of quality and compliance. We  aim to continually provide innovative and efficient solutions that meet the evolving needs of our customers.

9.What is your message to Indian Trade?

With India's rapidly-expanding economy, logistics has become a crucial aspect of the country's growth. PSA Mumbai has invested in developing a world-class facility that meets international standards and will continue to do so. Our recent 2million TEU achievement highlights PSA Mumbai’s pivotal role in contributing to the growth of the Indian logistics sector while maintaining the highest standards of safety, sustainability, and customer service. We remain committed to making a positive impact, and as the terminal continues to expand and innovate, PSA Mumbai is well-positioned to meet the evolving needs and growth of the industry in the region.
