MUMBAI: Participating in the joint terminal operators’ global “Go-Green” campaign, employees of APM Terminals Mumbai and the families of the local unit of the Indian Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) planted approximately 140 trees at the CISF barracks at Nhava Sheva in the Jawaharlal Nehru Port (JNP) complex, India’s busiest Container Port.

“These trees will serve as a continuous and living reminder of our commitment to environmental sustainability” said APM Terminals Mumbai Chief Executive Officer Mr. Pradip Agrawal.

The ‘Go Green’ Campaign is a joint collaboration of global marine terminal operators APM Terminals, DP World, Hutchison Port Holdings Limited (HPH), PSA International and Shanghai International Port Group (SIPG), five of the world’s largest port operators, joined by the Port of Rotterdam Authority (PRA).

These operators have launched the first-ever joint industry initiative of this scope to promote environmental awareness and make a sustainable difference in the communities in which they operate.

This year the campaign focused on three main themes: re-use and recycling, global climate and interaction with the communities in which the industry giants operate. A range of activities covering all three themes was organised by the participating port operators’ local business units to address and raise awareness globally.

The campaign also strives to identify local partners in an effort to improve the environment by creating and upgrading local green spaces, launching educational programmes, adopting waste recycling measures and fostering community engagement.

The Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) is India’s premier multi-skilled security agency providing security at vital installations throughout the Country. The JN Port Township houses families of CISF employees, contractors and others working at the Port. Volunteers from APM Terminals Mumbai along with CISF Senior Commandant Mr. Dhananjay Nayak, his team, and their families participated in the tree planting project.

“Trees are the best gift of nature. What better way to thank the CISF for providing us with the much needed security and executing their jobs with such professionalism. We hope to see these trees provide some tranquillity for them and their families after a hard day’s work”, stated APM Terminals Mumbai Chief Operating Officer Mr.  Ravi  Gaitonde.

Among other local Go-Green activities, APM Terminals Mumbai collaborated with DP World, Nhava Sheva and organized environment awareness sessions at local schools generating a very positive response from over 500 students and staff.

Beach cleaning activities were carried out at the nearby Uran’s Pirwadi beach in collaboration with APM Terminals Inland Services, India.

Jawaharlal Nehru Port, serving Mumbai, is India’s busiest container port, accounting for 41% of all India’s containerized cargo traffic of 11 million TEUs in 2014. It is the 29th-busiest container port in the world, with throughput of 4.47 million TEUs in 2014. APM Terminals Mumbai, a joint venture between APM Terminals and the Container Corporation of India Ltd. (CONCOR), is India’s busiest container terminal, with a throughput of 1.99 million TEUs in 2014.
