Box volumes at Chinese Ports increased in 2018

BEIJING: Ports in China handled 251 million TEUs of containers in total in 2018, up 5.3% from the previous year, according to statistics compiled by the nation’s Ministry of Transport (MOT). 
In breakdown, coastal ports were responsible for 222 million TEUs, up 5.2%, while the remaining 29.09 million TEUs were moved to and from inland river ports, up 6.2%. Sea-and-rail containers amounted to 4.5 million TEUs nationwide, which surged a notable 29.4% and accounted for 1.8% of the total container throughput. 
Looking at container lifting at the top five ports, Shanghai processed 42.01 million TEUs, up 4.4%; Ningbo-Zhoushan, 26.351 million TEUs, up 7.1%; Shenzhen, 25.736 million TEUs, up 2.1%; Guangzhou, 21.623 million TEUs, up 7.2%; and Qingdao, 19.315 million TEUs, up 5.5%.
