MSC organized HAZ training on IMDG Code

MUMBAI: The Mediterranean Shipping Company, commonly known as MSC organized one day training on hazardous cargo in Mumbai at MSC Office.
 
Capt. Anshuman Baruah,  in charge of the haz desk at MSC explained the importance of IMDG Code handbook and Capt. Swaminathan Rajagopalan, General Manager, Marketing Sales highlighted on MSC regular services.
 
Mr. Shashi Tanna, Managing Director, Links Cargo Agencies Private Limited and President, AMTOI were also present at the training session of MSC. Mr. Mukesh Oza, President & CEO of  the Samsara Group were  present.
 
Addressing the session, Capt Anshuman, Baruah said indeed it is very special day for MSC to conduct such an interactive training programme on hazardous cargo dated 12-12-12.
 
The voulmes are growing and as India's economy continues to grow from strength to strength, it offers valuable opportunities.
 
He emphasized the importance and modalities of port and ship safety and energy efficiency for environmental sustaniability and also stressed on integrated system design, standarisation data as well as integrated transport, port and vessel design.
 
The aim of the training programme was to realise the involvement of IMDG Code. Further, Mr. Baruah elaborated and explained the need of IMDG Code handbook, adding, IMDG Code has been established by MSC (Marine Safety Committee) of IMO (International Maritime Organization), an organization of United Nations. 
 
The aim is to establish an international standard on the transport of dangerous goods as claimed in SOLAS Convention and is subject to revisions to be made every two years.  The personnel who classify, pack, mark, label, placard, load/ unload cargo transport units, prepare transport documents, offer / accept / handle for transport, prepare loading plans, load / unload dangerous  goods into/from ships, carry dangerous goods in transport,  enforce or survey or inspect for compliance with applicable rules  and regulations  or are otherwise involved in the transport of dangerous goods as determined by the competent authority should complete their IMDG Code training .
 
IMDG Code Amendment 36-12 may be used from 1st January 2013 (subject to national administration adoption) and is mandatory from
 
1 January 2014. The IMDG Code General Awareness and Familiarization Training Program focuses on the safe and compliant transportation of dangerous goods transported by ocean common carrier.
 
During the session, the importance of appropriate, UN-approved packaging during transport was also touched upon i.e. packages that will retain the product safety, not react with the product, and withstand the normal rigours of sea transport.
 
Mr. Baruah pointed out, MSC have unique standard code for packaging.
 
Capt. Swaminathan Rajagopalan through power point presentation explained about the growth prospects of MSC.
 
He added, good team work and customers trust and support made MSC to attain greater heights.
 
Today, Mediterranean Shipping Company S.A. (MSC) is the world's largest shipping line in terms of container vessel capacity. The throughput increased from 1 million to 14 million TEUs.
 
Elaborating on MSC, Capt Rajagopalan said MSC always been in the forefront carrying about the environment safety. The line has 440 container vessels serving 6 continents. MSC offers a number of services such as IPAK, ISES, Golden Gate, Nhava Sheva Salallah service from North/West and South/ East India to destinations around the world. MSC offers special feeder  service to Salallah.
 
The salient features of MSC's services from India were summarised as two departures per week to Europe; direct port of call (per week) to 6 ports in Mediterranean and NWC; largest network of 33 offices in India; global service network; faster response to market needs and availability of capacity to cater to the growing market; and container availability at all cargo origin points.
 
On behalf of AMTOI and Links Cargo Agencies, Mr. Shashi Tanna presented Mr. Anshuman Baruah with a bouquet. Also seen were Mr. Mukesh Oza, Samsara Group.
 
Mr. Shashi Tanna congratulated MSC for arranging an interactive training session on Ports and Shipping.
 
He stressed that the IMDG Code handbok should be provided to all the orgainization which will benefit them in all aspects.
 
Mr. Oza said “we are ready to conduct more such training programme at MSC for the benefit of trade”.
